The use of portfolio assesment to improve students grammar competence

Abstract: This study aims to describe the use of portfolio assessment to see the improvement of students’ grammar competence. The research applies descriptive method. The theories used in this research are portfolio assessment by Brown, grammar by Harmer, and parameter of grammatical errors by Burt and Dulay. The result of the study shows that the portfolio assessment can improve student’s grammatical competence, by the category of pronoun, tenses, noun, verb, preposition, and the students can write better regarding the reduced number of grammatical errors in their paragraph writing.
